In February 2021, I emailed Alan Clements about his four-volume interview series Burma's Voices of Freedom (co-edited by Fergus Harlow). In response to my questions, he was gracious enough to give me some advice on interviewing:
"The best way of learning the art of the interview is to study interview books. Next have a topic you want to learn about and next find someone you are inspired to learn from. From there, reach out, tape, transcribe, edit, done. You must want to learn from the person. You want to know what they know, the good, bad and ugly. The art is getting another to share truthful information, that they themselves rarely share with anyone. In that sense you must have a good understanding of human psychology. Love the question. Ask good ones. Even so getting some to talk and tell you the truth is a deeper issue."
